With a rare appearance on a Friday the Eaton Girl’s Varsity Tennis team once again loaded up for an hour trip to the Cincinnati area to take on Div 1 opponent Sycamore. The tennis team are doing what they can to make the best of the Covid-19 situation. Normally they would not be playing on Friday due to football but the team was playing away, which allowed them to take on another top team in Cincinnati.
As the scores indicate, Eaton had their work cut out for them on 3 of the 5 courts. The two courts that weren’t really contested were 1st and 3rd singles. Macy faced off against a solid player but was really able to dictate the points for the entire match. Another match where she didn’t even drop a game. And Grace Murphy had a very similar match. She was calm, cool, and collective on her way to an easy win.
The 1st and 2nd doubles teams are definitely getting a highet level of competition then what they had last year. Tess and Erika had an extremely competitive match and despite being on the losing end, I thought it was some of the best tennis they’ve played. Granted, a loss is still hurts especially when it’s very close but they should be able to take away some positives from it for the future. At 2nd doubles Anna and Haneet had a tough match up as well. They just couldn’t get any momentum during the match. They played some very smart and good points but had no sort of consistency to their game. Much of it induced by their opponents.
The deciding match ended up being 2nd singles with senior Sophie Murphy scratching and clawing her way through the match. She jumped out to a commanding lead only to see it disappear as fast. She closed out the set by winning 3 straight games but then battled back and forth for the next set until finally getting to 6-4. She just had to stay patient and wait for the right ball to go after.
The good news is the win brings the Eagles to 10-1 overall but the bad news is they have to return to the area the very next day, Saturday 12th, to take on Mariemont for the 2nd rd of the OTCA State Team Tournament.
