The girl’s tennis team traveled to Tipp City on Monday and had one of their toughest, most competitive matches to date. It was all expected. What was unexpected was extreme heat and a strong wind that definitely influenced the matches. Just having seen them two days ago at the Schroeder High School Invitational and having to face off against them in last year’s sectional, we knew we had our hands full. People think our singles line up is tough but Tipp City returned two district qualifiers and added a freshman who can compete with those qualifiers. Last year at sectionals, Sophia Murphy had to play both Tipp City girls. Beating Dakota Schroeder in the semifinals but then losing to Amelia Zweizig in the finals.
In this match though, Sophia was able to avenge her loss as she prevailed in straight sets. The match was closer than the score indicates. Both girls were playing some strong points.
After some early season success Tess Murphy had her hands full with Tipp’s freshman. She tried to rally back from a slow start but fell short losing in two.
Even though they lost, both doubles teams made sure that Tipp had to beat them and they weren’t just going to hand it to them. Addie and Brianna even made a really strong push for the second set that would have forced a deciding set but Tipp came up with a big service game when they needed it.
The match of the day was at 2nd singles however. Grace Murphy played one of the hardest and longest matches of her early career. She took nearly 3 hours in sweltering heat to out last the Schroeder girl 7-5, 7-5. She also had to battle back from being down 1-4 in the second set and once again from 4-5. It was a truly spectacular match to witness. Both girls were playing some great tennis. To make it even sweeter, Grace had just lost to her on Saturday in the finals at the Schroeder Invitational. Albeit it in a proset.

This was a great measuring stick for us. Tipp is a powerhouse and will be one of the top ranked teams at the end of the year so it’s good to see where we’re at and where we need to improve. We will actually see them 2-3 times again this season.

This upcoming week will be a challenge for the Eagles as they face Bellbrook and Greenville. Two schools we never have beaten.
