For the first time in program history, an Eaton Tennis Team was able to to come out with a win against a very good Alter team. Not only a win but a clean 5-0 sweep. Alter, being one of the top ranked teams in the State, we knew we were in for a very challenging match with the Knights. Even though the score makes it look like a convincing win, that was far from the case. If you look at the scores, we had some real scares at both doubles spots and 2nd singles. We were familiar enough with this team to suspect those were going to be the deciding courts.
At first singles, Macy Hitchcock encountered an opponent who she knew fairly well. They both train at the same club and really have similar routines throughout the year. This was a good match for Macy, because she knew she had to be focused and ready to go. Her opponent was a district qualifier last season and was heavily motivated to beat Macy. This win will be beneficial come sectionals time. Grace Murphy continued her great start and had the easiest win of the day but her opponent made sure she had to work for it.
At 2nd singles, Sophia Murphy had to endure another terrific but laboring back and forth match. This was the point when the uncertainty of the match began. While Sophia was in a true dogfight, both doubles teams got creamed in the first set. Not even close. On top of that, Tess and Erika were down 0-3 in the 2nd set. This is when the match could have gone a totally different direction with us on the losing end. However, by someway and somehow, Tess and Erika started to win a few games, then they won a couple of more and they climbed their way back into the match. Winning the 2nd set was obviously huge because it kept us in the match but it was a devastating blow to Alter. Similar in the 2nd doubles match. Anna and Haneet could not get out of their own way in the first set but then found a way to win the second set easily. After that, they’re opponents were deflated and we got the third set even easier. Anna and Haneet actually secured the match for us. The icing on the cake was that Tess and Erika kept the momentum going as they still had to compete for the 3rd set. And Sophia trailed late in both sets but when it really mattered she stepped up her game and got both sets 7-5, 7-5. Even battled back from 1-4 in the second set. That was a great win for her especially coming off of the heartbreaker with Seven Hills. Hopefully this puts a little fire in her belly and a bounce back in her step.
The Eagles are now 7-1 overall and prepare for league rival Valley View on Thurs who are boasting a 6-1 record.
