On May 1st the Eaton boy’s tennis team participated in their annual SWBL Southwestern division league tournament. The Eagles entered the tournament in 5th place trailing 4th place Monroe by two points. Considering that Bellbrook was running away with league and 2nd and 3rd place were out of reach, our goal was to try and see if we could catch Monroe. As the dust settled at the end of the day, mission accomplished. The Eagles did just enough collectively to tie for 4th place with the aforementioned Monroe.
1st singles Andrew Collins had a heartbreaking loss to Brookville in the 1st rd 0-6, 6-2, 5-7. He then rebounded with a strong win over Monroe 6-2, 6-2 which earned him 5th place for the day.
2nd singles John Altom had the best day of the group by placing 3rd. He won over Monroe 6-3, 6-2, then lost to eventual champion Bellbrook 5-7, 2-6. In the 3rd place match, John got a great win over Valley View winning long, hard fought match 6-4, 6-4. After losing to the same opponent in the dual match, this was a very sweet win.
3rd singles Matthew Wright won against Brookville 6-2, 6-1, lost to Bellbrook 2-6, 1-6, then lost to Valley View 3-6, 1-6. By beating Brookville in the first round, he was guaranteed 4th place.
1st doubles Keith Turner and Austin Pugh lost to Monroe 1-6, 1-6 then won over Brookville 6-4, 6-4 garnering them 5th place for the day.
2nd doubles Kendale Hamilton and Dawson Brubaker also lost to Monroe right off the bat then rebounded with a very gritty 3 set win over Franklin 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 which earned them 5th place as well.
Overall it was a solid day for the boys. Despite the tough loss with Andrew at 1st singles, John helped us get the point back by his 3rd place finish. Everything else played out as expected. I always try and set a challenging but reasonable goal for the league tournament and so I was really proud of the entire team in reaching that. Getting a piece of 4th place is admirable given the the strength of some of the other teams in our league. And the league tournament is always kind of fun to play because you get two or three matches to play in a day even if you’re losing. Unlike our upcoming Sectionals where it’s a bit more cutthroat, where it’s single elimination.
